Between January and April 2026, 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click, up from 58.5% a year earlier. Organic search still drives roughly 53% of all website traffic, but the share you actually capture from a top ranking is shrinking. When an AI Overview appears, the click-through rate on position one drops an estimated 34.5%.

For B2B SaaS teams accountable to pipeline, ranking well still matters. It just doesn't settle the outcome on its own. Three priorities worth building your 2027 SEO plan around.

Priority 1: Allocate Content by Funnel Stage, Not by Volume

AI Overviews hit informational queries hardest. Seer Interactive's April 2026 data puts AI Overview presence at 36% of informational queries, compared with 8% of commercial and 5% of transactional. The format-level view is worse: comparison queries ("X vs. Y") trigger an AI Overview 95.4% of the time. "Best of" queries hit 81.3%. Those are the exact formats most mid-funnel B2B content is written in.

BOFU and MOFU pages (pricing, alternatives, comparisons, integrations, use-case pages) should still get the heaviest investment. Transactional and navigational queries remain the most click-protected ground in search, with zero-click rates under 20%.

What changes is how you define "winning" on a mid-funnel page. Seer found that pages cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 120% more clicks per impression than uncited pages on the same SERP. But cited pages still trail no-AI-Overview results by 38%. Citation is the best position available on an AI Overview SERP, not a return to the old baseline.

The trade-off: you're building comparison and "best of" content in a format heavily intercepted by AI answers. The reason to keep doing it is that commercial intent behind a query like "best CRM for multi-location operators" hasn't weakened, and being cited is measurably better than not. Track citation status alongside position. If you rank first but the AI Overview cites three competitors, your rank tracker reports a win you didn't get.

TOFU still has a role in topical coverage, internal linking, and entity authority. Invest in it after BOFU and MOFU opportunities are covered, not before.

Priority 2: Structure Content for Extraction, Not Just Readability

AI systems pull passages that stand on their own. A paragraph that only makes sense after reading the two above it is far less likely to be quoted than a table row, a definition-led sentence, or a self-contained answer under a question-formatted heading.

The operational shift: write each section so it can be lifted without surrounding context. Start with a one- to two-sentence definition. Follow with clear lists or tables under H2 headings. Write self-contained answers under question-formatted subheads. Depth matters as much as structure. Across multiple client sites, Verto Digital has seen indexing slow for large, undifferentiated blocks of text. Fewer, deeper articles outperform high volumes of thin ones. Omniscient Digital found that for branded queries, earned media accounted for 48% of AI citations, commercial brand content 30%, and owned content 23%. Original data, firsthand testing, and clearly named entities all increase citation odds.

One thing worth knowing: Google retired FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. The content pattern (question-formatted headings with concise answers) still earns extraction. The markup earns nothing.

Priority 3: Build Entity Authority, Not Just Link Authority

Schema markup used to be about winning SERP features. Those features are shrinking. Its remaining value is machine comprehension: telling search engines and AI systems what entity a page concerns and how it relates to others.

Before spending another sprint on markup for AI visibility, know what the data shows. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026, compared them with 4,000 matched controls, and found no major uplift in AI citations. AI Overview citations fell 4.6% (the only statistically significant result). AI Mode rose 2.4% and ChatGPT rose 2.2%, both within the noise band.

Schema alone won't earn AI citations. Prioritize Organization, Product, and Article markup that resolves ambiguity about who you are and what you sell. Then spend the rest of your authority-building budget on signals that actually matter: original research, expert authorship with visible credentials (E-E-A-T), external mentions and links from credible sources, and consistent entity presence across the web.

What to Measure (and What Not to Over-Interpret)

Some projections forecast traditional search volume falling 25% as AI search grows. That's a projection, not observed data. Seer's own 2026 finding is that organic CTR on AI Overview queries bottomed at 1.3% in December 2025 and rose to 2.4% by February 2026. Seer calls this a leveling off rather than a recovery and warns against forecasting from two months of data.

The honest framing: organic search is still the single largest traffic source for most B2B sites, and the click economy is shrinking. Both things are true. Planning for 2027 should be scenario-based, not built on a single assumption. Invest where intent is highest, structure content for the systems that mediate answers, build the kind of authority that AI and humans both trust, and measure what actually maps to pipeline.
