The ratio most demand gen budgets ignore

Strip vendor domains out of 35,000 ChatGPT citation URLs from SaaS-related prompts and one number stops the conversation: UGC platforms hold 17.1% of cited domains overall. Publishers sit at 4.0%. Review platforms land at roughly 8–13%, depending on buying stage. That's a 4x gap between UGC and publishers, and the larger bucket is the one with the least deliberate investment on most teams' plans.

The data comes from an analysis run for G2 in February 2026, covering US-only ChatGPT citations captured in December 2025 via Profound. Each prompt was classified into a journey step (discovery, exploration, evaluation, focused evaluation) and each citation URL reduced to a root domain. Limitations are real: one engine, one market, one month. But the pattern is clear enough to act on.

Review sites spike. Community doesn't.

Review platforms swing with purchase intent: 7.4% share in discovery, climbing to 13.2% at evaluation, then falling back to 8.4% in focused evaluation. A 5.8-point range. That makes review campaigns a reliable bottom-of-funnel lever you can schedule against a quarter.

UGC barely moves. 17.8%, 18.2%, 15.1%, 17.2%. A 3.1-point range across all four stages. It's a floor, not a spike. A review campaign concentrates its payoff at a known stage. Community presence has no such stage — it demands work when someone is learning what their needs are, and still demands work when they're choosing between two finalists. Even at evaluation, UGC still leads review sites in citation share.

The floor holds at 17%. The platforms underneath it don't.

Wikipedia, Reddit, and LinkedIn account for 99% of UGC citations in this sample. Wikipedia alone runs 10.1 to 14.0 points of that 17-point floor depending on stage — the single largest third-party source in the dataset, bigger than the entire review platform class at every step except evaluation.

The catch: these platforms are volatile. In the 28 days to June 8, 2026, Reddit's visibility dropped 11.7% and AI mentions fell 10.9%. Three weeks later the bucket reversed. LinkedIn surged 43.3% in SEO visibility. Reddit climbed 18.1%. But every one of those platforms lost AI Overview citations in the same window it gained organic visibility. Google rewarded them in search and cited them less in AI answers, simultaneously.

Treat UGC as a portfolio. The aggregate is the number to defend. The composition is what you rebalance. The platforms aren't interchangeable:

How to produce community signals without astroturfing

Find which UGC platforms your category feeds. Run your highest-intent prompts and record which UGC domains appear in citations. The 17% is an average; composition is local to your topic.

Answer the questions your support queue already sees on repeat. Ticket logs, sales call transcripts, and in-app search queries hold the exact phrasing buyers use. A question already asked on Reddit is one you can answer with real expertise, not marketing copy.

Correct the record that's already sitting there. A 2023 thread claiming you lack a feature you shipped in Q2 2025 stays retrievable and keeps feeding AI answers. Reply in-thread with a dated correction and a changelog link. Set alerts on brand plus category terms (F5Bot for Reddit and Hacker News, Syften for Discord and Slack) so you catch stale information in weeks instead of quarters.

Make your customers' words retrievable on your own pages. Pull real third-party review quotes, with links to the source, into the top 30% of your highest-cited pages. Research found 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of a page. Whether positive third-party proof in that band changes how AI describes your brand is untested at scale — run it as a test with a stated hypothesis and a control set.

Measure the aggregate, rebalance the mix. Track UGC-sourced citations as one number and platform composition as a second. The first tells you whether the floor is holding. The second tells you where to shift effort next quarter.

The measurement gap nobody's closing yet

In July 2026, Google introduced platform properties in Search Console — clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position for Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube. Reddit isn't on the list. Neither is LinkedIn. The two platforms doing the most work in the UGC bucket are the two you still can't measure natively. And the new feature reports visibility in Google Search and Discover, not AI answers.

The community signals feeding AI answers stay unmeasured for now. Teams that build their own tracking early own the only read on the largest third-party source class in the dataset. The budget that reflects that reality will look strange next to peers'. The pipeline it protects won't.
