OpenAI just announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT that appears alongside images users ask ChatGPT to generate. The ad is clearly labeled, sits separate from the generated image, and (OpenAI says) won't influence ChatGPT's answers. A U.S. test with a small group of advertisers is slated for later this month. Meanwhile, an independent analysis of existing ChatGPT ad clicks raises a question the new format inherits: how much of the traffic is real?

The Format: Creative Surface Meets Trust Boundary

Visual ads next to image generation are a different animal from the text-based sponsored placements ChatGPT has run so far. The creative surface supports product shots, use-case visuals, and brand imagery, all rendered alongside whatever the user asked the model to create. OpenAI's framing is deliberate: ads are labeled, separated, and don't touch the model's output. That trust boundary is the whole bet. If users start suspecting the generated image was shaped by the ad buy, the format dies on contact.

For B2B SaaS teams, an ad slot adjacent to image generation opens room for product-UI screenshots, workflow diagrams, or template previews. But it's a limited U.S. test right now. Treat it as a creative experiment to watch, not a channel to staff up for.

The Measurement Stack Is the Real Move

The visual format grabbed the headline, but the measurement expansion matters more for anyone running pipeline math. OpenAI announced third-party partnerships spanning conversion-data integrations (Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp), attribution and reporting (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Kochava, Northbeam, Rockerbox, Singular, Tenjin, Triple Whale), full-funnel measurement (Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL), incrementality testing exploration (Haus, Measured, WorkMagic), and brand-suitability pilots (DoubleVerify, Integral Ad Science). The short version: ChatGPT Ads is moving from "interesting placement" to "auditable channel." For teams that won't touch a channel they can't pipe into their CRM, this is the prerequisite, not a bonus.

OpenAI shared a few partner-reported performance examples. Rockerbox reported that WeightWatchers' cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark. WorkMagic reported statistically significant lift for Dose, with 67% of incremental purchases coming from new customers. Triple Whale reported 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new visitors for Portland Leather. These are partner-attributed, advertiser-specific snapshots, not benchmarks you can generalize across B2B SaaS with different ACVs and sales cycles. But they signal that some advertisers are seeing signal worth chasing.

The Click-Quality Problem Nobody Should Ignore

TrafficGuard, an ad-verification vendor, published an analysis based on 40,021 ChatGPT ad clicks reaching 78 websites from 47 advertisers over three weeks (late August to mid-September 2026), compared with roughly 5.6 million Google Ads clicks from the same advertisers in the same window.

The findings: invalid-click rates on ChatGPT Ads ranged from 0.1% to 34% by advertiser. Across the full sample, TrafficGuard counted 1,592 invalid clicks, about 4%. Clicks from hosting, proxy, or malicious-IP infrastructure showed up at 3.34% on ChatGPT versus 0.92% on Google (roughly 3.6x). Clicks with device configurations that couldn't exist in the real world appeared at about 0.86% on ChatGPT versus 0.09% on Google (about 9x). Four hosting and proxy networks accounted for nearly half of all invalid clicks and reached 25 of the 47 advertisers.

Caveats matter here. As PPC Land noted, TrafficGuard's findings are vendor-reported, based on a limited sample and short window, with anonymized advertisers. The analysis doesn't establish how many flagged clicks OpenAI ultimately billed after its own filtering. The overall invalid-click rate TrafficGuard measured for ChatGPT (about 4%) was actually lower than the 10.8% it measured for Google in the same advertisers' campaigns. Still, the mix of suspicious signals is different, and "different" in a new channel means you need independent verification before you trust platform-reported conversions at face value.

The Operator's Diagnostic Before You Spend

If your team is considering ChatGPT Ads (visual or otherwise), run the diagnostic before you run the budget.

Where This Leaves the Channel

OpenAI is doing the right things in sequence: build the ad surface, then build the measurement layer, then invite verification partners. That's the playbook a channel needs to earn budget from teams that care about pipeline, not impressions. The visual format adds creative flexibility. The partner integrations add auditability.

But the click-quality data is a reminder that new channels attract new noise. The measurement stack OpenAI is assembling will only matter if teams actually use it to validate, not just to report. A channel that can prove incrementality to qualified pipeline will earn its way into the mix. One that can only show you clicks won't, no matter how good the creative surface looks.
